The homeschool debate

I am really debating homeschooling my two middle sons. They are both going into 4th grade. We are finding that the school curriculum is too fast paced and worksheet oriented to address the boys' more hands on learning style. The last school year was very challenging for us all, and I felt like I spent more time in the classroom and out RE-teaching them the lessons in different styles than doing anything else. Jay in particular really struggles with classwork and math. He can sit through an hour lesson in school on division and get nothing from it, but I can sit with him for 20 minutes with a pile of marbles and bowls to divide them into and he grasps it with no problems.

The issue that I am facing is my own organization, or lack thereof. I am notorious for not finishing things I start and I am afraid that I will fail them in the realm of homeschooling. My two youngest will be in school during the day so that will help a bit, but I am really concerned that homeschooling the two of them while I myself am in school full time will be biting off more than I can chew. If anyone has suggestions or tips regarding to homeschooling and organization/floow through, I would be eternally grateful!

  1. We are considering home school too. Tamara's family home schooled; four boys and one girl. My sister-in-law too; five boys, three girls. It can be successful, but it's a full time job, along with all your other full time jobs.

Praying for you. That's a tough one.

  2. I totally could have written this post last year. I knew where my heart was but I also knew my strengths and weaknesses. I will tell you that everyday is not perfect, there are good and bad days. For me I found I could do it, regardless of my lack in follow through or disorganization of things, because Zach was that important to me. Traditional school was just not working for him and I refused to see him lose his love of learning. There are a TON of great curriculum choices that can help you too. If you would like, I would be happy to talk with you over the phone and give you an honest look at what HS looks like for me. Message me on FB and I can give you my phone number.

    Best of luck,
    Nichole

  4. No matter how you plan it, it will go differently. As long as you go into homeschooling knowing that the first year is a blossoming of not just the kids but of YOU, and be accepting of the surprises, then you will do fine.

One thing I did to compensate for my lack of proper organization was do our work in the mornings. The kids were fresh, I was fresh, and it left the afternoon wide open for us.
